Filling a Large 4×2 Raised Garden Bed

A 4 metre by 2 metre raised bed provides an impressive 8 square metres of growing space, enough to supply a family with a significant portion of their vegetable needs throughout the year. This size is popular for serious home growers who want to maximise production without needing to walk on the soil. Filled to 300mm depth, you'll need approximately 2.4 cubic metres of garden mix soil to bring this bed to a proper growing level.

At 2.4 cubic metres, the soil weighs approximately 2.64 tonnes. This is a substantial delivery that will require a proper tipper truck, and you'll want to ensure you have suitable access for the vehicle. The delivery driver will need to get reasonably close to the bed's location, as moving nearly three tonnes of soil by wheelbarrow across a large distance is a considerable undertaking.

Planning for a Large Bed Fill

Before your soil delivery arrives, confirm where the truck can safely deposit the load. Ideally, have them tip as close to the raised bed as possible. If the bed is in the backyard with no truck access, consider whether the driveway can accommodate a pile this size temporarily. You'll also want to check that your raised bed structure is complete and stable, as filling such a large volume creates significant outward pressure on the walls.

The Case for Deep Soil in Large Beds

The 300mm depth specified here isn't arbitrary. Deeper soil gives roots more room to grow, which translates directly to healthier plants and better yields. It also provides greater water-holding capacity, reducing watering frequency during hot Australian summers. For a bed this size, where you might grow everything from shallow-rooted lettuce to deep-rooted tomatoes and pumpkins, the extra depth pays dividends throughout the growing season.
