Filling a Circular Sandpit
Round sandpits offer an attractive alternative to traditional rectangular designs, with a softer appearance that integrates naturally into garden landscapes. Many prefabricated sandpit kits come in circular form, making this shape increasingly popular. A sandpit with a 1.5 metre radius creates a 3 metre diameter play area with approximately 7 square metres of surface. At 300mm depth, this requires approximately 2.12 cubic metres of washed sand, weighing around 3.2 tonnes.
The circular shape actually provides slightly more play area than you might expect. A 1.5 metre radius circle has 7.07 square metres compared to a 2.5 metre by 2.5 metre square with 6.25 square metres. The rounded edges also eliminate corners where sand tends to accumulate and become compacted with less use.
Circular Sandpit Construction Options
Creating the circular edge is the main challenge with round sandpits. Prefabricated plastic or composite sandpit surrounds provide the easiest solution and come in various diameter options. For a DIY approach, flexible timber edging or stacked natural stone can create an attractive circular border. Some homeowners use large tractor tyres as ready-made sandpit walls, though these work better for smaller sandpits due to tyre size limitations.
Coverage Tips for Round Shapes
When ordering sand for circular shapes, the mathematical area calculation accounts for every part of the circle. In practice, you may need slightly less sand than calculated if your circular surround has thick walls that reduce the interior diameter, or slightly more if you want the sand to extend right to the edges. Order to the calculated amount and you'll have enough to work with, using any small surplus to top up the level as the sandpit settles.
