Using Sand to Level Your Yard

Sand provides an excellent medium for levelling uneven ground before laying turf, installing pavers, or preparing a base for other projects. Its fine particles flow easily to fill low spots and can be screeded to a precise level with simple tools. For a typical backyard area of 8 metres by 6 metres requiring a 50mm levelling layer, you'll need approximately 2.4 cubic metres of washed sand. This weighs around 3.6 tonnes, making bulk delivery the practical choice for quantities this size.

The 50mm depth represents an average for general yard levelling, but your actual requirements will vary depending on the unevenness of your existing surface. Areas with more pronounced dips and hollows will need more sand, while relatively flat yards might need less. It's worth measuring the deepest low spots in your yard to estimate whether 50mm average depth will be sufficient.

Sand Versus Soil for Levelling

Sand offers advantages over soil for levelling work because it compacts uniformly and doesn't contain organic matter that could decompose and cause settling. For areas that will be paved, sand is preferred because it won't shrink or expand with moisture changes. However, if you're levelling for lawn, consider using a sand and soil blend or applying topsoil over the sand layer so grass roots have nutrients to grow into.

Levelling Technique

Spread sand across the area, working from one end to the other. Use a straightedge or levelling rake to distribute material evenly, checking frequently with a long spirit level. Compact the sand lightly with a roller or plate compactor, then check levels again and add more sand to any remaining low spots. This process may need repeating several times to achieve a truly flat surface. Water the sand lightly between compaction passes to help it settle.
