Building a Lasting Garden Path Foundation

A properly prepared base is what separates a garden path that lasts decades from one that becomes uneven and develops problems within a few years. Whether you're finishing with pavers, stepping stones, gravel, or decorative aggregate, the compacted roadbase foundation provides the structural stability that prevents movement and settling. For a typical garden path of 8 metres by 1.2 metres at 100mm depth, you'll need approximately 0.96 cubic metres of recycled roadbase, weighing around 1.7 tonnes.

Garden paths don't carry the loads of driveways, which is why 100mm depth is usually adequate. This provides enough material to compact properly while keeping material costs reasonable for what is often a longer, narrower profile that uses material efficiently. For paths that will see occasional wheelbarrow traffic or garden equipment, the standard depth handles these loads comfortably.

Why Recycled Roadbase Works Well

Recycled roadbase, made from crushed concrete and construction materials, offers excellent value for garden path bases. It compacts well, provides good drainage, and performs similarly to quarried products at a lower cost. The environmental benefit of using recycled materials is a bonus. The slightly more varied particle sizes in recycled roadbase can actually improve compaction, as the irregular shapes interlock effectively under compaction.

Path Edge Definition

Before placing roadbase, consider how you'll define the path edges. Timber edging, steel strips, or flush-set pavers create clean boundaries that contain the base material and eventual surface layer. Installing edging before filling with roadbase ensures a neat finish and prevents base material spreading into adjacent garden beds. The edging also makes compaction easier by providing solid sides to work against.
