Using Mulch for Effective Weed Control
If your primary goal is suppressing weeds rather than just improving garden appearance, you'll need a thicker mulch layer than standard applications. For a 5 metre by 3 metre garden bed where weed control is the priority, applying 100mm of bark mulch instead of the typical 75mm makes a significant difference. This 15 square metre area at 100mm depth requires approximately 1.5 cubic metres of mulch.
At 1.5 cubic metres, you're looking at around 0.6 tonnes (600 kilograms) of bark mulch. This quantity falls nicely into bulk delivery territory, making it economical to get the deeper coverage needed for serious weed suppression. Bark mulch is particularly effective for this purpose because it breaks down slowly and maintains its structure longer than finer mulches.
How Mulch Suppresses Weeds
Mulch prevents weed growth through two mechanisms. First, it physically blocks light from reaching weed seeds in the soil, preventing them from germinating. Second, it creates a barrier that sprouting weeds struggle to penetrate. The extra 25mm in a 100mm layer compared to 75mm might seem small, but it significantly improves both effects. Seeds that manage to germinate have further to grow before reaching light, exhausting their energy reserves before they can establish.
Preparation for Maximum Effectiveness
For best results, remove all existing weeds before applying mulch. Don't just pull them, dig out the roots completely, particularly for persistent species like oxalis and couch grass. If you're dealing with a heavily infested area, consider laying landscape fabric beneath the mulch as additional insurance. Water the soil thoroughly before mulching, then apply your 100mm layer evenly. This approach will dramatically reduce weeding time throughout the season and often for years to come.
