Creating a Mulch Garden Path
A mulch path provides a natural, informal walkway through your garden that blends beautifully with surrounding plantings. Unlike hard surfaces, a mulch path feels soft underfoot and creates that quintessential cottage garden atmosphere. A typical garden path of 8 metres long by 1 metre wide needs a deeper layer than standard garden beds to withstand foot traffic. At 100mm depth, you'll need approximately 0.8 cubic metres of wood chip mulch.
The weight of 0.8 cubic metres of wood chip mulch comes to around 320 kilograms. This is enough material that bulk delivery becomes practical, though you could also collect it yourself with a standard trailer if you prefer. Wood chip mulch is the preferred choice for paths because it compacts slightly underfoot while still maintaining good drainage and a pleasant walking surface.
Why Paths Need Deeper Mulch
While garden beds work well at 75mm depth, paths benefit from the extra 100mm thickness for several reasons. Regular foot traffic compresses the mulch over time, so starting deeper ensures the path maintains adequate coverage between top-ups. The thicker layer also provides better weed suppression in an area where you definitely don't want plants growing up through your walkway. Additionally, a deeper path creates a slight visual depression that naturally guides visitors through your garden.
Path Installation Tips
Before laying mulch, define your path edges clearly. Timber edging, steel garden edges, or even a simple shallow trench can prevent mulch from migrating into adjacent beds. Lay landscape fabric beneath the mulch if you want extra weed protection, though this isn't essential with adequate depth. Spread the mulch evenly and rake it smooth, compacting it lightly with the back of your rake or by walking along the path several times.
