Mulching Around Tree Bases

Creating a mulch ring around your trees is one of the best things you can do for their health and your garden's appearance. A standard mulch ring with a 2 metre radius creates a generous 12.6 square metre circle that protects the root zone where trees absorb most of their water and nutrients. At 75mm depth, this requires approximately 0.94 cubic metres of bark mulch to provide effective coverage.

Bark mulch is the traditional choice for tree rings because it mimics the natural forest floor environment. At 0.94 cubic metres, you're looking at around 375 kilograms of material. This is an ideal quantity for a single bulk bag delivery, or you could pick up a cubic metre load yourself if you have trailer access. The slight extra will give you some material for top-ups or extending the ring later.

The Critical Rule: Keep Mulch Away from the Trunk

This is the most important consideration when mulching around trees. Always maintain a gap of at least 100mm between the mulch and the trunk itself. Piling mulch against tree bark creates moisture problems that can lead to rot, fungal infections, and pest infestations in the vulnerable bark tissue. Think of mulch like a doughnut around the tree, not a volcano piled up the trunk.

Benefits of Tree Mulch Rings

A properly mulched tree ring delivers multiple benefits throughout the year. The mulch layer moderates soil temperature, keeping roots cooler in summer and more insulated in winter. It dramatically reduces water evaporation from the soil surface, meaning your trees need less frequent watering during dry periods. The mulch also prevents grass and weeds from competing with the tree for water and nutrients, while eliminating the need to mow close to the trunk where you might damage bark.
