How Much Mulch Do You Need for 10 Square Metres?
A 10 square metre area is one of the most common garden bed sizes in Australian suburban homes. It's the typical size of a front garden bed along a fence line, a small courtyard planting area, or a narrow strip garden running beside a driveway or pathway. At the standard recommended depth of 75mm, you'll need approximately 0.75 cubic metres of wood chip mulch to cover this area properly.
This translates to around 0.30 tonnes (300 kilograms) of material, which most suppliers will deliver as a minimum order or can easily fit in a standard trailer if you're picking it up yourself. For 10 square metres, you're looking at roughly 15 standard 20-kilogram bags if you prefer the convenience of bagged mulch from your local hardware store, though bulk delivery is typically more economical even at this smaller scale.
Getting the Depth Right
While 75mm is the sweet spot for most garden beds, you might adjust this based on your specific situation. If you're topping up an existing mulched area that still has some coverage, 50mm may be sufficient to refresh the appearance and boost weed suppression. For areas with persistent weed problems or where you want maximum moisture retention during hot Australian summers, increasing to 100mm provides better protection—though this increases your requirement to a full cubic metre.
Choosing Your Mulch Type
Wood chip mulch works beautifully for most 10 square metre garden beds, offering a natural appearance and excellent longevity. If your bed features natives or acid-loving plants like azaleas, consider bark mulch or pine bark for their lower pH. For vegetable gardens or beds where you want to improve soil quality over time, lighter sugar cane mulch breaks down faster and adds organic matter with each application.
Remember to keep mulch pulled back 50-100mm from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent collar rot. Water your garden bed thoroughly before and after mulching for best results, and plan to top up annually as organic mulches naturally decompose and settle.
